Magnum Opus

“Vision is the art of seeing the invisible”, said Jonathan Swift. Hence, MAGNUM OPUS is the stage for those with the eagle’s eye. We invite original Optical, Scanning and Electron microphotographs from the students of Under graduate, Post graduate and Research level throughout the country. More so, we call upon the next Bessemers’ and Stanley Smiths’ to enlighten us with their innovations in models of: -

Various crystal structures
Modern and innovative production, beneficiation and refining techniques
Various integrated plants and industries related to metallurgy
Various innovative routes used in metallurgical processes
Genuine Optical Scanning and Electron microphotographs

Also models on various other existing and upcoming metallurgical fields – The stage is all yours!! All shortlisted microphotographs and models will be displayed by the corresponding participant in a seminar at N.I.T., Jamshedpur. A panel of distinguished judges from Tata Steel, National Metallurgical Laboratory, Tata Motors, Usha Martin, N.I.T. Jamshedpur, will be evaluating these microphotographs. Three avant-garde entries will be awarded with attractive prizes.

Rules

A maximum of 3 participants will be allowed in each group.
Both working and non-working models will be accepted.
Students are requested to send in their abstracts explaining their models or microphotographs, which should not be more than 150 words. The name of authors, their e-mail id and institute name should be given at the bottom of the abstract.
Abstracts complete in all respects should be sent to technica.jsr@gmail.com latest by 14th March, 2010.
All shortlisted participants will be uploaded in the website www.technica.co.in by 14th March.
The selected participants will display their models and micrographs in front of a panel of judges who will be evaluating the presentations.

N.B. – Students presenting working models are advised to bring their own power sources and accessories such as batteries, eliminators, extension cords, spike busters if required. They will be provided with 220V AC current source and switch-boards.

Industrial Visit

Industrial visit to Usha Martin.

USHA MARTIN
Started in 1961 in Ranchi, Jharkhand as a wire rope manufacturing company, today the Usha Martin Group is a Rs. 3000 crore conglomerate with a global presence. The group has set new standards in the manufacture of wire rods, bright bars, steel wires, speciality wires, wire ropes, strand, conveyor cord, wire drawing and cable machinery. With continuous growth in both the domestic and international markets, Usha Martin, the Group’s flagship company has emerged as India’s largest and the world’s Second largest steel wire rope manufacturer.

In 1979, the company set up a steel plant with wire rod rolling mill at Jamshedpur, to benefit from business integration. This ensured a steady supply of steel for the manufacture of value added products. Today, the Jamshedpur unit has a truly integrated speciality steel manufacturing facility of 400,000 MT per annum. Out of which, about 50% is consumed internally by its plant in Ranchi, Hoshiarpur & Bangkok, producing steel wire, steel strand, steel cords, bright bar and steel wire ropes. All its manufacturing facilities are ISO 9000 certified and the steel plant was India’s first to receive the TPM Excellence Award from JIPM, Japan.

NOTE: During the industrial visit, participants are required to wear formal black leather shoes.

NIT Jamshedpur through Rhetorix provides you the platform to do so. It is a cornucopia of innovative ideas and prospects conceived in the minds of outstanding budding metallurgists throughout India, be it students pursuing Bachelors & Masters Degree or technical people working in research or industrial organizations.

An esteemed panel of Judges from Tata Steel, National Metallurgical Laboratory, Tata Motors, Usha Martin, N.I.T. Jamshedpur, who will be evaluating these presentations on the basis of the Theme of the paper, Presentation of the paper and Q&A session. The three papers that are able to ace their scrutiny will be awarded with Cash Prizes.

Shortlisted abstracts will be put up on website www.technica.co.in by 15th March, 2010.
Three hard copies and one soft copy of the complete paper not exceeding 20 pages according to the IEEE format (For details, visit: www.ieee.org) during the time of presentation.
Total time of presentation would be 15 min. including the Q&A session.

Metal Quiz

Dr. Dara P. Antia Memorial Metal Quiz – as you battle it out in our magnanimous quiz, your mine of knowledge is the ultimate weapon in your hands. The more you extract from it, the better chances of survival you have. In this contest, students as well as engineers from industries and research organization will be invited to participate. There be will be an initial round of written test to short out the final contestants, who will be participating in the final open contest. The contest will be moderated by a Quiz Master. A big purse of prize money awaits the three winners along with certificates.
The war cry has been sounded.. prove your “mettle” and victory will be yours..!!

RULES:

There will b a maximum of 2 contestants of a group.
There will be a written preliminary round.
6 teams will be chosen for the final round.

Metalmorph

Microstructure studies are fundamental part of metallurgical engineering. A good metallurgist should be able to develop excellent metallograph of a microstructure. The basic aim of this event is to gauge the skills of participant in this area.

Event includes polishing of metal sample to get the best possible microstructure. The participants have to identify their microstructure and justify their choice before the jury. The performance of participant will be evaluated in terms of clarity of their microstructure, proper identification, apt reasoning and response to judge’s queries.

RULES:

Maximum two members per team are allowed.
Each team will be provided with a sample, emery paper, cloth polishing facility, etchants and metallurgical microscope.
A number of different samples will be available from which the team has to choose one sample and properly polish it.
Upon correctly identifying the sample, the team will be forwarded to jury where they have to justify their answer.
A time limit of 30 mins has to be followed by each team for polishing of a single sample.

Eclectic

One of the main attractive programs, which gives the students an opportunity to battle wits against those in the corporate world. In this contest students as well as Engineers from local industries and Research Organizations will be invited to participate.

In this event the industrial problem will be given and on that time you have to give answer. The participating candidates must come up with a pragmatic solution to the problems within the stipulated time. The shortlisted candidates will have to give a power point presentation citing the path to their solutions.

The three winners will be awarded with Cash Prizes and Certificates.

RULES:

Maximum two members per team.
All 3 problems must be answered.
World limit should not exceed 500 words in total for all 3 problems.
Entries should be submitted at technica.jsr@gmail.com clearly specifying the EVENT NAME AND COLLEGE NAME and TEAM MEMBERS.
Abstract should be submitted by 12th March, 2010.
Shortlisted candidates should bring 2 hard copies of the detailed solution during presentation.

Problem statements:

Zero solid waste in steel plant with a focus on utilization of steel making slag.
Development of suitable alternative iron bearing material to replace hot metal in steel making process. Steel industry would like to have an exothermic material to reduce the cost of melting.
Prevention/Reduction of Silicon Scale also known as Tiger Scale in hot rolling of high Silicon Steel.
